Aspiring artists, young and not so young, can participate in the first San Carlos City-wide Art Project. Sign up for this event and you will be delivered a packet with a number of art projects for the family. Send in your pictures and we'll post them on the Week of the Family web site. Projects include:
    • Sidewalk Art Theme: "We love San Carlos". Your packet contains sidewalk chalk. Create art on your sidewalk to uplift people in your neighborhood.
    • Coloring Theme: "Our Family". Your packet contains crayons. Get some paper and create a family art project.
    • Rock Painting Theme: "Only One You". Your kit contains a rock. Celebrate the uniqueness of you by painting a rock showing your cultural and /or family traditions, or simply traits that are unique to you! Or paint a rock to share words of hope, love, and wisdom in your native language. We'll include your rock in our proposed rock garden in Burton Park. Click the following link Only One You for inspiration.
    • Card Making Theme: "Valentine's Day". Your kit contains two holiday cards. Create a Valentine's Day card with your family. Drop the cards off at Arbor Bay School, or Tierra Linda Middle School. We'll distribute these to local seniors.
    • Other options: Create your own art project and share it.
COVID SAFETY: This event does not require any interaction with people outside your immediate family.

Since its inception in 1999, the Week of the Family Committee has designated the Monday of the week as a time reserved for families to stay at home and do something specifically with their family. It is hoped that reserving a set time each week for family time will become habit-forming. To show their support, when the event is not on a holiday, San Carlos principals have historically declared Monday, as a "No Homework" night.

Family Activity Day is for everyone. You are encouraged to “adopt” friends and neighbors who would enjoy an evening of family activities.

Ideas for things to do as a family:
    • Play board or card games
    • Get out the family photo album
    • Make up a play or story
    • Make dinner—everyone contributes a dish
    • Make a family calendar
    • Read a book aloud (book lists are available at the library)
    • Write letters to grandparents or other family members
    • Draw or paint a picture
    • Learn how to use a compass
    • Pull out your old records, tapes, CDs, then listen to and discuss music
    • Tell stories from your family history
    • Go to the library
    • Bake bread
    • Start a family journal
    • Sing

Explore the stars at the Hiller Aviation Museum Tuesday-Thursday!  The Virtual Invention Lab provides a fun remote discovery experience featuring a special presentation by Hiller Aviation Museum staff members, construction of a hands-on project that can be built at home from everyday office supplies, and a virtual tour of an artifact on display at the Hiller Aviation Museum.  The Week of the Family program explores the space exploration as participants build a paper star wheel and learn to use it to find the shining constellations of winter in the January night sky.  Each session concludes with an examination of the Hiller Aviation Museum’s SpaceShipOne replica!

No registration is necessary, but participants will need to print out the star wheel template in advance and will need scissors to build the project.  Visit the Virtual Invention Lab page to download the handout and find the Zoom link for each session.

For three nights during Week of the Family you have the opportunity to the family cook(s) the night off! Eating dinner with the family is often cited as a cherished childhood memory. Allow our community-minded restaurateurs to help you celebrate.

To support San Carlos restaurants, there will be NO DISCOUNTS this year. We instead are asking San Carlos families to support restaurants that have supported us in past years. Thank them for supporting San Carlos Week of the Family.

Do you have a reluctant reader? Sign your child up to have their own session to practice reading with a therapy dog through Zoom.

Studies show that children who may not want to read in front of their peers are much less anxious with an animal present. Children don't perceive animals to be judgmental and reading to an animal helps them become more confident readers. We’d like to thank our partners for making this possible: Pet Assisted Therapy teams and their handlers from the Peninsula Humane Society & the SPCA's Paws for Tales program.
